What we do

ICES advises governments and international commissions on the sustainable use of living marine resources and protection of the marine environment.

ICES advice is:

  • Independent advice starting from best available knowledge of biological conditions: based on international science, application of research results, and international databases;
  • Quality assured: peer-reviewed;
  • Transparent: the advisory process is documented and open to observation;
  • Legitimate, unbiased, and non-political: considered legitimate by governments and stakeholders;
  • Recognized by all parties to management.

Our clients include:

  • Governments of ICES member countries;
  • European Commission (EC), in relation to the Marine Strategy Framework Directive, the Habitats Directive, and the Common Fisheries Policy;
  • Helsinki Commission (HELCOM);
  • North Atlantic Salmon Commission (NASCO);
  • North East Atlantic Fisheries Commission (NEAFC);
  • OSPAR Commission (OSPAR).

ICES is working towards integrated ecosystem assessments and integrated advice, delivered at the regional seas level.

ICES provides advice to support the implementation of marine policies by competent authorities and organizations, but has no responsibility for the policy or legislative decisions made on the basis of its advice.
