Working Group on Marine Sediments in Relation to Pollution (WGMS) has been merged with Marine Chemistry Working Group (MCWG)

In years past, WGMS has played a key role in the advancement of sediment related science and has provided advice on the analysis of sediment related parameters, the analysis of contaminants in sediment, normalization of contaminant data from sediments, sediment dynamics, and background levels of sediment contaminants.

More recently, the group has been active in the field of application of passive sampling devices in the marine environment. Some current areas of particular interest include passive sampling for studying and monitoring of contaminants in sediments.

WGMS efforts have resulted in guidelines for monitoring and assessment tools in support of harmonized monitoring under OSPAR's Joint Assessment and Monitoring Programme, which relates to their hazardous substances strategies. WGMS has also produced various publications for ICES TIMES and CRR report series.

The group works closely with many other ICES expert groups such as the Marine Chemistry Working Group (MCWG) and the Working Group on Biological Effects of Contaminants (WGBEC).
