The Working Group on Scenario Planning on Aquaculture (WGSPA) will develop and apply methods of analysis to aid planning for aquaculture that comprehensively understand potential environmental, economic, and social trade-offs.

Given the rapid growth of aquaculture, there are burgeoning demands from planners, the industry, and regulators for scientifically informed planning tools.

The work of WGSPA will help managers, industry, and society understand the implications of different possible pathways of aquaculture development in specific locations of the ICES region. It will also enable descriptions of production potential to be provided.

Scenario planning offers a structured way to inform and include society in the development of aquaculture. It does this through considering a series of alternate futures for the industry and their respective environmental, social, and economic consequences. To meet its goals, te group will bring together experts in marine spatial analysis, economics, environmental carrying capacity and growth models, social systems, and food security.
