ICES Annual Science Conference 2021

Theme session E

Connecting economic, social science, and interdisciplinary research and management advice

Wednesday 8 September
18:00-20:00 CEST

Interdisciplinary and human dimensions activities have expanded in ICES through the Strategic Initiative on the Human Dimension and related groups (e.g. WGECON, WGSOCIAL, WGMARS, WKCONSERVE, WKBESIO, among others). In addition, many organizations like IMBER, NOAA, and PICES include the human dimension explicitly in their portfolio and connect with organizations like IIFET and MARE, who bring in fisheries economics and marine social sciences.

Significant challenges remain. How can we develop a virtuous cycle in which new management challenges can be effectively matched with the appropriate scientific research and data to provide timely and thorough advice? This session will focus on how we can best make this science-to-advice connection for economics and social sciences.

Participants will briefly summarize the key outtakes from recent workgroup and conference activities, especially the MSEAS 2020 Symposium, the IIFET 2020 Conference, and the 2019 IMbER Ocean Sciences Meeting. Representatives of these events will summarize the results with respect to research needs and directions.

At the same time, ICES scientists and staff will discuss different avenues to deliver advice and research results and how these tools might better incorporate current research.

Presentations on economics, social science, and interdisciplinary methods as well as case studies related to the topic of including analyses in advice products are welcome. We expect the range of these topics could be quite diverse, from fisheries policy analysis to methods of calculating fishing effort with vessel monitoring system data.
