Excursion to Cape Spear and shoreline clean-up

Wednesday 20 July
13:00–17:30

Take a trip to the easternmost point in North America!
Sign up for one or both events (Cape Spear only or Cape Spear and Shoreline Cleanup) at the registration desk. There is no fee to participate.

Cape Spear Lighthouse National Historic Site is home to the oldest surviving lighthouse in Newfoundland and Labrador and is an iconic symbol of the province’s marine history. Constructed in 1836, the lighthouse was a beacon of safe passage until 1955, when a new lighthouse tower was built nearby using the original light. Explore the lighthouse and get a glimpse into the life of a lightkeeper! Cape Spear is also the site of the World War II coastal defence battery – Fort Cape Spear – where Canadian and American soldiers guarded St. John’s from German U-boats. Walk in their footsteps as you soak up the history of the location.

The shoreline clean-up is organized by the Canadian Node of the Global Ocean Decade Early Career Ocean Professionals (ECOP) Program. You can continue to this event direct from Cape Spear or you can return to the conference venue.

By signing up for the event you acknowledge that none of the organizers can be held liable for any personal damages during the excursion – please be mindful of your own and other
people’s safety on-site.
