After the first shock: An assessment framework for understanding the impact of COVID-19 on fisheries

Marloes Kraan, Marine Social Scientist, Wageningen Research and Environmental Policy Group, Wageningen University

Soon after the initial wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, ICES Working Group on Social Indicators (WGSOCIAL) hosted listening sessions to gather insights into global impacts on fisheries. These sessions revealed that: 1) the impacts will be ongoing; 2) there are both global and local contextually specific impacts; 3) differences are linked to social and cultural context; 4) impacts can be assessed in different ways yet brought together under a common framework; and 5) a core common set of baseline data is critical, yet often lacking, for effective fisheries social science, advice, and management and is needed to assess and monitor the impacts of both shocks such as COVID-19 and regulatory and market changes.
