Soon after the initial wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, ICES Working Group on Social Indicators (WGSOCIAL) hosted listening sessions to gather insights into global impacts on fisheries. These sessions revealed that: 1) the impacts will be ongoing; 2) there are both global and local contextually specific impacts; 3) differences are linked to social and cultural context; 4) impacts can be assessed in different ways yet brought together under a common framework; and 5) a core common set of baseline data is critical, yet often lacking, for effective fisheries social science, advice, and management and is needed to assess and monitor the impacts of both shocks such as COVID-19 and regulatory and market changes.
Bio:
Marloes is a marine social scientist, working as a researcher at Wageningen Marine Research (applied research), and at the Environmental Policy Group at Wageningen University in the Netherlands. She is co-director of the Centre for Maritime Research in Amsterdam. She is one of the editors of ICES Journal of Marine Science and within ICES community she also is member of the Strategic Initiative on the Human Dimension, the Working Group on Maritime Systems, and co-chair of the Working Group on Social Indicators.
Marloes is interested in contributing to increasing inter- or transdisciplinarity in maritime research, interactive fisheries governance and improving the applicability of social science in fisheries science and policy.
