ICES Journal of Marine Science becoming fully open access

From January 2023, ICES Journal of Marine Science will become fully open access.

In its almost 100 years of publishing, ICES Journal of Marine Science (IJMS) has helped marine scientists to stay at the forefront of their research. By making the transition to an Open Access journal, IJMS will expand its reach to anyone interested in its scientific content. All of the Journal's material will become freely available to read - including an archive that spans more than 100 years.

As a gold Open Access journal, IJMS will rank first among fisheries open access journals, second among marine and freshwater ecology, and third among oceanography open access journals by impact factor.

When will the change to open access take place?
With the release of Volume 80 in January 2023, IJMS becomes a gold Open Access journal. All manuscripts submitted and accepted after 1 October 2022 will have an article processing charge (APC) applied as these manuscripts will be published after the change to open access (January 2023 onwards). The usual hybrid licensing will be applied to manuscripts accepted before that date.

Why is IJMS transitioning to open access?
A growing number of funding agencies, research institutions, universities, and governments state that research that they fund must be published as open access. By switching to gold Open Access, IJMS will comply with these requirements.

IJMS would like to stress that a financial barrier should not deter anyone from publishing in the Journal, as individuals will be able to apply for a waiver. Waiver applications will be simple with prompt decision-making (see information about APC waivers).
