100, not out!

Jens Smed, former ICES Hydrographer and Chef du Service Hydrographique, has reached the grand old age of 100.
Published: 20 March 2014

While Smed officially retired from his ICES post in 1984, he continued with his other love: historical writing.

Smed has taken on the role of ICES historian and he has played it quite well. He has written extensively on the history of the organisation with his work focusing on three areas: the role of nations and their political interest in establishing ICES, the role of eminent scientists like Nansen, Krümmel, Pettersson, Schott, Knudsen, and Herwig and their scientific interest in creating international cooperation, and the impact of ICES products in the advancement of marine science. Jens was presented the first ICES History Award in Aalborg, Denmark in September 1995 in recognition of the work he has carried out.

In honour of Jens turning 100, ICES has created an online repository for Jens work. A selected collection of Jens articles can now be found on the ICES website. The Jens Smed Archive: An ICES history lesson covers topics such as the foundation of ICES, the different early ICES personalities, and of course the work carried out by ICES as an organisation.

Smed said that it felt quite special to live to 100 but that he wouldnt be climbing out the window like a fellow centenarian as the drop was too far!
