Armstrong, former fisheries scientist at the UK's Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science, was selected for the accolade based on his sustained and strong contribution to ICES science. This has included 24 years' involvement in the stock assessment process as chair, reviewer, and participant of multiple working groups.
He has also worked extensively in developing best practices in catch sampling, lending his vision has been a driving force in the shift towards statistically sound sampling programmes – both for ICES and beyond. More widely, Armstrong has been a member and chair of a number of planning and steering groups, also working towards a larger strategic goal of improving the documentation of the quality of data.
He has at least 50 peer-reviewed papers and four book chapters to his name, alongside contributions to over 80 ICES expert group reports.
As well as the scientific output, colleagues singled out Armstrong's leadership and mentorship qualities as well as his ability to enact the most rigorous of standards.
“His motivation, selflessness and dedication have never ceased to amaze me. He is always assisting less experienced colleagues, sharing his vast knowledge and actively contributing to every discussion with challenging points and ideas," said Colm Lordan, vice-chair of ICES Advisory Committee (ACOM).
