Setting the science for the ASC 2016

Submit a theme session proposal for next year’s Annual Science Conference (ASC), taking place in the Latvian capital, Riga
Published: 20 May 2015

ICES Science Committee (SCICOM) is now inviting proposals for theme sessions for ASC 2016, to be held in Riga, Latvia 19-23 September. The week-long conference is an exciting forum at which the international community of marine scientists, professionals, and students meet and share their work through theme-based oral and poster presentations.

Whilst covering the most exciting and innovative research in marine science, theme sessions should reflect and address the scientific priorities of the organization as expressed in the new Strategic Plan. A constituent of this is the Science Plan, which focuses on Integrated Ecosystem Understanding and Integrated Ecosystem Assessments (IEAs).

Applicants should also link their proposals to one of ICES Science Steering Groups (SSGs), an action area such as the Arctic or aquaculture, or the Advisory Committee (ACOM).

Potential conveners can also outline ideas for the format and the running of the session. Alternative formats include: the theme session, which can include a range of components from oral and poster presentations to keynotes and general discussions; a panel discussion, made up of short talks and a general discussion, to confront perspectives on societal issues; and an innovation presentation, two or three short talks followed by a general discussion, with a focus on research project breakthroughs or technological developments with novel applications in marine science.

Theme session proposals resulting from meetings or consultations held during this year's ASC will also be considered provided they are submitted by midday on Wednesday 23 September 2015. Unsuccessful proposals from 2014 will not be considered unless they are resubmitted.
