The early scientist catches the worm

Alongside the latest science, the upcoming Annual Science Conference (ASC) will include a pair of events targeting scientists who are in the early stages of their careers.

Everyone has a first ASC and ICES welcomes all those joining us for the time, especially early career scientists. Stepping into the world of the science conference for the first time can be a little daunting. You may have heard of some of our speakers, you may work with members of our community, or you may know nobody. In order to help you along this year we have organised a few events in addition to the official programme that will introduce you not only to the work of ICES, but also to the people that carry out that work.

Meet at the bus stop

The first social event of the week is on Monday evening. So let’s use the chance to make new contacts. At the Welcome reception, taking place at Palexco, there will be an early career scientist bus stop manned by a rotation of SCICOM members (SCICOM has 20 members, one from each ICES member country) as well as the ACOM leadership. If you have any questions about ICES, the role of SCICOM or ACOM, how to become involved in working groups, or you would just like to be introduced to your national ICES delegate, please come along. This is also a great place to meet your fellow early career scientists. And who knows where the bus might go at the end of the reception?

Career chat

On Tuesday afternoon, a number of well-known members of the marine science community will take part in a career chat. In an informal setting, you will have the opportunity to ask our experts about their respective career paths and what advice they may have for you. This event represents a unique opportunity to meet experts from around the world that have taken different career paths into a range of disciplines. Come along armed with your questions and create your own discussion. This event takes place in Palexco during the lunch break. As places are limited, please register your interest by booking your place online.

Highly prized

Many conferences give merit awards at the end of the event, formally recognizing the best research papers and posters. What is different in ICES is that we also reward as many as three early career scientists for their excellent oral or poster presentations. These awards are significant, and include a financial contribution for the awardees to attend ICES workshops, working groups, or conferences. These awards are presented at the Closing Ceremony and provide a fitting finale to an action-packed conference.

ICES Annual Science Conference 2014 runs 15-19 September at the Palexco Congress and Exhibition Centre in A Coruña, Spain.
